2002 - 2003 Meeting Notes May 2003 - Barry Rogers: General Manager and Chief Operating Officer from LFG Technologies. He has over 20 years in the power industry and 12 years in the solid waste industry. He has installed over 15 Megawatts of landfill gas projects. Barry will be flying in from New York to present to our group. Barry discussed the use of landfill gas for power generation. Landfill gas offers a low-cost, local, renewable energy resource with high reliability. Using landfill gas as a power source reduces methane emissions and other fuel sources normally used to generate electricity. April 2003 - Our speaker was Al Thumann, P.E., C.E.M from AEE headquarters. Al has served as Executive Director of AEE for the last 25 years. Under his leadership, AEE has to grown to over 9,000 professionals in 75 countries. He has authored more than 25 reference books on energy and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1997. March 2003 - Our speaker was Mel Jones, Executive Vice President of Business Development and Chief Operating Officer for Sterling Planet. Mel discussed how "Green Power" is marketed, developed, and delivered. Sterling Planet is headquartered here in Atlanta. Their
primary business focus is to market and develop renewable energy sources for
residential, institutional, and commercial customers. February 2003 - Our February speaker was Terry Colbert from Nakahoma, Inc. He presented technical information and case studies on the Compress Shield polarized refrigerant oil additive (PROA). Compress Shield was developed by two Metallurgy professors (C.H. Wilkins & Charles Thompson) at the University of Alabama. It can be used in A/C systems from small split systems to large chillers. Compress Shield increases lubricity, and in turn improves
equipment service life expectancy. It forms a one molecule thick bond to
the system tube wall and prevent pooling of oil thereby improving the average
heat transfer coefficient. Treated systems produced an average increase in
energy efficiency of 15%. Compress Shield is sold by the installed ton and
costs range from $20 - $100 per ton based on system size. January 2003 - Our January speaker from Vericor Power Systems, Michael Hall, gave a great presentation on gas turbine CHP systems. The presentation included a good background on combined heat and power (CHP) systems and also profiled some actual installations. Attached (3.9MB) is his slide presentation.
